Auxiliary

Both the Madison County Hospital Auxiliary and the Foundation are made up of hundreds of men and women who organize special fund raising activities to benefit the hospital.

Their combined efforts over the years have provided the hospital with almost two million dollars in charitable gifts and pledges to use for capital projects.

Here at Madison County Hospital, every volunteer is an important part of our hospital family. We encourage you to join us!

How the Auxiliary Began

In 1961, voters approved an operating levy to build Madison County Hospital the first time it appeared on the ballot. Soon after, Frances Helmick was hired as the hospital's first administrator.

One of her first acts was contacting London resident Virginia Hume to talk about organizing a women's Auxiliary. Their talk paid huge dividends for Madison County Hospital that year and every year since.

The Auxiliary's first official meeting was held January 25, 1962, at the Madison County Courthouse at 8 p.m. with 200 in attendance. Officers and committee members who served that first year included:

Mary Snyder, President
Mary Bohyer, Vice President
Doris Berry, Recording Secretary
Mrs. Robert Harper, Corresponding Secretary
Mrs. Robert Ryan, Treasurer
Jane Peck, Vivian Brewer, Helen Meade and Mary Hankins, Gift Shop
Virginia Hume, Reception Desk
Sue Chaney, Central Supply
Sue Nichols, Patient Care

With the hospital's opening just nine months away, membership quickly swelled to over 500 women. Their three initial fundraisers - Telephone Bridge, the Stethoscope Stomp and Key Days - netted $2,330. Since that time, the Madison County Hospital Auxiliary has held countless other fund raising events, earning over $500,000 and making it the hospital's most generous benefactor.

We are especially grateful to the charter members who are still a vital part of today's Madison County Hospital Auxiliary:

Barbara Amling
Mary Ellen Ardrey
Jean Bacon
Nancy Beathard
Sue Chaney
Bambi Hackett
Joyce Hildebrand
Norma Markley
Helen Meade
Jean Sanders
